Why This Matters
Because everyone deserves to be understood—and to understand what’s happening around them.
Deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing individuals face daily challenges in getting accurate information during life’s most important moments: a medical diagnosis, a job interview, a court hearing, or a parent-teacher conference. Without qualified interpreters in these situations, communication can break down, and that breakdown can lead to serious consequences.
This campaign is grounded in the belief that clear communication is a basic need. When interpreting services are consistent and reliable, people can make informed decisions, participate in their communities, and live with greater independence. That’s why we’re working to create a system that supports quality, professionalism, and trust in interpreting across Tennessee.
It Began with Community Conversations
In 2023, this effort began with deaf and interpreter communities sharing their stories: moments when we recognized communication broke down, access wasn’t provided, or interpreters lacked the necessary skills or ethics. These weren’t isolated experiences; they were patterns seen across Tennessee.
People came together and asked a simple question: What would it take to make interpreting services more consistent, reliable, and respectful of the people they serve? The answer pointed to licensure. It’s a pathway to better services, shared standards, and peace of mind. This campaign is the result of those conversations turning into action.
